I built a prompt for Claude to read and rate articles from top open-access news sources, de-duplicated to one exemplar per story. That gives me a curated list of news articles to read: filtered, de-duplicated, scored, and ranked for my concerns.

Ties are broken by relevance, then recency.

Filtered: only for items dated 9–16 October (last week’s news). Since most feeds expose only their latest items, coverage is heavier on 13–16 October 2026. Articles are pulled from two leading open-access sources in each of five fields (General: BBC News and The Guardian; Engineering: IEEE Spectrum and Interesting Engineering; Medicine: STAT News and MedPage Today; Science: Nature and Science; Business: Reuters and Fortune).
De-duplicated: articles reporting the same event were grouped, across and within sources (for example the Oregon school shooting in BBC and Guardian, or six Reuters pieces on CoreWeave’s debt troubles). One exemplar was kept per group: the fullest straight news report, preferring the general-news source when quality was similar. Related but distinct articles (an explainer versus a news report on a different angle) were kept separately.
Scored: for relevance to the concern tree in Survive, Thrive, Nurture: an agenda in a slogan (0–5) and for direction (−5 makes things worse, +5 helps). Each exemplar’s body text (up to about 9,000 characters) was read and scored. Scoring was done in parallel batches against one written rubric; treat individual scores as approximate.
Relevance: 1 light touch, 3 substantial national-scale bearing, 5 direct large-scale threat or remedy.
Rating: never exceeds relevance; zero relevance means zero rating. Reports of harm are rated by the harm; responses and remedies are rated positive.
Ranked: based on Euclidean distance calculated as √(relevance² + rating²)
The prompt is attached, so you can replicate it yourself. Copy everything below the line into Claude. Change the two dates first. It works best in an environment where Claude can use a real web browser (to read full article text) and run sub-agents in parallel.
---
Build an interactive HTML page called **”Relevant News”**. It shows how one week of news bears on the concern list in Rahul Saxena’s blog post “Survive, Thrive, Nurture: an agenda in a slogan” (https://ramblingrahul.blogspot.com/2019/04/survive-thrive-nurture-agenda-in-slogan.html).
Date window: articles published from **{START_DATE}** to **{END_DATE}** inclusive (7 days).
The concern list (score against this):
Decide on how to make the decisions needed to survive, thrive, and nurture. Includes (1) individual decisions or personal choices, (2) shared-value decisions (most organizational and corporate choices), and (3) value-exploration decisions where the values themselves are debated (democratic governance, elections, rule of law, civil liberties, institutions, regulation of powerful technologies).
Survive: staying alive as an individual, family, group or species. Survival concerns include cosmic or planetary catastrophes, environmental change (from poor management of agriculture, energy and transport), disease (civil-engineering failures, chemical and environmental pollution, public-health failures, antibiotic resistance, vaccine refusal, new pathogens), violence (murder, war, organized crime, insurgency, terrorism, capital punishment, new weapons such as bio-agents or autonomous drones), famine (unsustainable farming, soil depletion, crop failure, food-supply shocks), water shortage, accidents (road, industrial, domestic) and natural disasters, or suicide. Extending individual lifespan is separately called out here as an opposing item in this list.
Thrive: a better standard of living. This covers basic needs (food, clothing, shelter), access to energy, healthcare, education and transport, and reducing losses between provision and beneficiary (corruption, fraud, waste, transmission losses). It also covers better health, more leisure, better food and drink, and entertainment. The economy, jobs, prices, and technology that raises living standards belong here.
Nurture: helping other living beings survive and thrive, moving outward from pets, to farm and commercial plants and animals, to all life on Earth (biodiversity, conservation), to all life in the universe.
Sources: two leading open-access sources per field
General: BBC News, The Guardian
Engineering: IEEE Spectrum, Interesting Engineering
Medicine: STAT News, MedPage Today
Science: Nature, Science
Business: Reuters (Business section via the site’s own content API, latest 120), Fortune
Collection rules
Keep only items dated inside the window. Most feeds expose only their latest items, so record how far back each source actually reaches and report it on the page.
Skip video, gallery, audio and live-blog URLs.
Fetch each article’s page and extract the body text. Prefer JSON-LD `articleBody`, fall back to `<p>` text, and cap it at about 9,000 characters.
Drop items with no readable text.
A cloud sandbox is usually blocked by these sites. Fetch from a real browser tab on each site’s own origin (same-origin `fetch`), and store each source’s results in that origin’s `localStorage` so they survive reloads.
De-duplication
Group articles that report the same event, both across sources and within one source. Examples: the same shooting covered by BBC and The Guardian, or several Reuters pieces on one company’s debt troubles.
Keep one exemplar per group: the fullest straight news report, preferring the General source when quality is similar.
Keep related but distinct pieces separate (an explainer versus a news report on a different angle).
Record, for each exemplar, how many duplicates were folded into it.
Rating: read the full text of every exemplar. Use integers only. To get through hundreds of articles, split them into batches of about 50 and run parallel sub-agents against one written rubric file. Give each agent its own browser tab and its own scratch subfolder. Tell agents to keep their key lists in local JS variables, not `window` globals. Have each agent write tab-separated output: key, date, source, title, URL, text length, REL, RAT, CAT, reason. Afterwards, validate that every key appears once, has 10 columns, and obeys the score rules.
REL (0–5): relevance to the list.
0: no bearing (sports results, celebrity gossip, shopping lists, horoscopes)
1: light touch (an entertainment item, minor corporate news)
2: clear but modest bearing
3: substantial, national-scale bearing
4: major (deadly war events, epidemics, large climate, food or water threats, democratic crises in big countries)
5: a direct, large-scale threat or remedy (famine for millions, full-scale war, a pandemic-scale response)
RAT (−5…+5): does the development the article reports make that concern worse (−) or better (+)? Rate the real-world event, not the article’s tone. A report of harm is negative; a response, remedy or discovery is positive. |RAT| ≤ REL, and REL 0 ⇒ RAT 0.
CAT: the primary category code, one of Decide, Survive, Thrive, Nurture, or 0. This weeds out the irrelevant articles.
Reason: at most 15 words.
Ranking
Distance = √(REL² + RAT²).
Top 100 = the relevant articles (REL ≥ 1) with the largest distance. Break ties by higher REL, then by more recent date.
If fewer than 100 articles are relevant, list only those.
The page (output)
Make a single self-contained HTML page with inline CSS and JS and no chart libraries. It needs light and dark themes driven by CSS colour tokens, has to work at phone width, and uses a serif display face (Newsreader), a sans body face (IBM Plex Sans) and a mono face for data (IBM Plex Mono).
Sections, in order:
Header: an eyebrow line (dates · “two leading open-access sources in five fields · rated from full text”), the title “How the week’s news bears on Survive · Thrive · Nurture”, and a lede linking to the blog post.
Stat row: exemplar count; relevant count; negative / positive counts; mean rating over relevant articles; “N of 100” top-100 negative.
Scatter, relevance (y, 0–5) against rating (x, −5…+5), drawn in inline SVG. Points are jittered deterministically inside each integer cell, and each cell shows its count. Color by tier: Decide indigo, Survive brick red, Thrive green, Nurture teal, Not relevant grey. Top-100 points are outlined. Hovering or tapping a point shows a tooltip with headline, source, concern, scores and reason. Add field filter buttons (All / General / Engineering / Medicine / Science / Business) and tier legend toggles.
By source table: field, source, articles, relevant, mean REL, mean rating (relevant articles only), number in the top 100.
Top 100 ledger: rank, linked headline (to the original article), source · field, the reason in italics, a “+n” tag for folded duplicates, a “teaser” tag for stubs, a concern chip, REL, signed rating (red or green), distance, and date. Add filters for concern, field and direction.
Method and limits (collapsible): sources and actual date coverage; substitutions (such as Fortune for CNBC); collected / empty / duplicates / exemplar counts; the de-duplication rule; the scoring rubric; the number of teaser-only items; a note that scores are approximate.
Concerns by source type: a stacked bar chart with one bar each for Decide, Survive, Thrive and Nurture (not-relevant articles left out, with their count given in the caption). Segments are counts of exemplar articles by source field, using their own palette: General slate blue, Business ochre, Engineering purple, Medicine rose, Science teal. Show counts inside segments tall enough to hold them and totals above each bar; segment tooltips give exact counts.
Check the page at desktop and phone width in both themes, confirm there are no script errors, then publish it.
